Coffee Talk: New Study Shows Drinking Coffee May Lower Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

A new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease suggests that drinking coffee may lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of California, Irvine, analyzed data from 1,445 individuals over the age of 65.

The researchers found that individuals who drank coffee had a 65% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who did not drink coffee. The study also found that the protective effect of coffee was stronger for those who drank three or more cups per day.

While the study does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship between coffee consumption and a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease, it adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that coffee may have neuroprotective properties.

“The results of this study are very exciting,” said lead author Dr. Donald A. Smith. “If further research confirms these findings, it could lead to new ways to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease.”

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, with an estimated 2.25 billion cups consumed every day. It contains several bioactive compounds, including caffeine and antioxidants, which have been linked to various health benefits.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Alzheimer’s Association, and was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University of Southern California and Wake Forest School of Medicine.
